EMS is proud to celebrate National Osteopathic Medicine (NOM) Week! Sponsored by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), NOM Week brings the osteopathic medical profession together to focus on one common goal: increasing awareness of osteopathic medicine and osteopathic physicians (DOs) in communities across the country.
You may be wondering, “What is a DO?”
There are two types of fully licensed physicians in the U.S. – MDs and DOs. Their training and education are very similar and equally rigorous, but DOs come at the practice of medicine from a different philosophy. They also tend to partner with their patients to help them get healthy and stay well.
NOM Week also offers an opportunity to educate the community on the importance of osteopathic medicine to the healthcare field.
If you’re a DO, take time to share your NOM Week moments with your network or the AOA using the hashtag #NOMWeek18, #DoctorsThatDO, or #ProudDO. Share them on the AOA’s Osteopathic Physicians Facebook wall, tweet them to @AOAforDOs, or email them to NOMweek@osteopathic.org.
The AOA’s mission is to advance the distinctive philosophy and practice of osteopathic medicine. Serving as the professional family for more than 129,000 DOs and osteopathic medical students, the AOA promotes public health and encourages scientific research. In addition to serving as the primary certifying body for DOs, the AOA is the accrediting agency for all osteopathic medical schools.
